Residential Counselor


Under the direct supervision of the group supervisor the residential counselor provides for the daily child care and supervision of the residents and for the implementation of the child’s and group’s behavioral plan.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  1. Demonstrate a passion and commitment for the vision and mission of Maryvale and the mission and Vincentian Core Values of the Daughters of Charity.
  2. Promote and support the attitudes, behaviors, knowledge and skills necessary to work respectfully and effectively with each other as well as demonstrate the ability to address the needs of the children and families Maryvale serves.
  3. Provide nurturing care to residents on a daily basis.
  4. Implement assigned activities in group.
  5. Follow through on individualized care plans as directed.
  6. Supervise and participate in group activities as directed.
  7. Encourages and supervises children’s participation in the general upkeep of the group living areas.
  8. Supervise mealtime for the assigned group of children.  Mealtime is considered “on duty” work time.  Therefore the resident counselor works an 8-hour day instead of 8.5 hours.
  9. Used appropriate de-escalation procedures when residents are upset and the hierarchy of containment procedures as needed to insure resident safety.
  10. Document special incidents per Maryvale policy and procedure.
  11. Transports children to outside appointments as directed.
  12. Communicated pertinent information to supervisors.
  13.  Participates, implements and completes in-service training programs as directed.
  14. Attends and actively participate in all group meetings.
  15. Dispense medications when required per Maryvale policy and procedure.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A Bachelors Degree, an AA degree or its equivalent and two years experience in residential setting or four years experience in a related Mental Health field. 
  2. Have an understanding of the special needs of disturbed children
  3. Have a thorough understanding of the program structure and philosophy in their group.
  4. Current and valid California Driver’s License
